Bassist Magazine 1999Paul Simonon on bass playing:
"I’ve got one thing to say about being the bass player. I didn’t want the role of being Entwhistle or Bill Wyman, stuck in the background. That’s too depressing and if that was what I’d been offered with The Clash I would’ve turned it down. Maybe that’s the nature of the job, or has been in the past; the bass player as the one that held the fort, so to speak, along with the drummer, letting every body else go lunatic. But, y’know, why can’t we all be lunatics?"

It's such a cliche to think of the bassist as the Wyman/Entwistle type. What about Bootsy Collins, Paul McCartney and a gazillion others who came before Simonon?
Btw: Being the lead guitarist is overrated. If I were still 16 years old I'd learn the bass to be like Fre...

simonon ma kienx jaf jdoqq. U dak fatt. Mhux kwestjoni ta critics. Eventwalment taghlem. Come London Calling he was quite a good player. But back in 77 he was shite.
As regards lead guitarists. Yes they suck.
